Anna Maria Oyster Bar’s Summer Reading Program Recognized Nationally

BRADENTON, Fla. (April 17, 2018) – Anna Maria Oyster Bar received the 2018 Restaurant Neighbor award in recognition of their efforts to help children avoid summer learning loss, known as the summer slide, through the Dive Into Reading summer program. The annual award is part of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) celebration of the “best of the best” in diversity and inclusion, community service and hospitality leadership. Dive into Reading 2018

We are thrilled to announce that our Dive Into Reading program is returning this June with more locations and more kids! The Anna Maria Oyster Bar created this program in partnership with the School District of Manatee County and the Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading with help from many community partners. In Manatee County alone, 49% of our 3rd Grade students are not able to read to their grade level and their opportunities to catch up are limited. A special holiday dinner for the “Dive into Reading” participants

Each year, we try to recognize a special group or organization for our annual holiday dinner party. This Christmas, we wanted to invite the students, their families, and volunteer mentors from our first ever “Dive into Reading” Summer Reading Program. The program focused on improving the reading levels of rising 3rd graders and to prevent a concept called the “Summer Slide”, where students that stop learning over summer break have a hard time catching back up. Literacy Day at Palmetto Elementary

As part of the Anna Maria Oyster Bar’s continued commitment to promoting grade-level reading, John & Amanda Horne were invited to visit Palmetto Elementary on Friday, October 6 to mark International Literacy Day. They had a blast with Ms. Mueller’s fourth graders (pictured at top) who read titles like “The Day the Crayons Quit” and “Mummy Trouble.”  John & Amanda were joined by representatives from the Palmetto Police Department and other community leaders for this very special occasion. Dive into Reading – Fall Update

Dive Into Reading Update – We’re thrilled to announce the success of the students from our Dive Into Reading program. Data from the School District of Manatee County showed that for the students completing the Suncoast Summer Book Challenge, there was an increase in reading proficiency. The students who participated in the Anna Maria Oyster Bar Summer Reading Program showed an average gain of .8 months of reading proficiency.
